Applying Methods focuses on exploring a variety of methods used in implementing public participation and engagement and considers how to design and integrate those methods into the public participation and engagement practice process. Participants will learn to select, assess and create effective elements of methods to work meaningfully with participants. See course agenda.

Course Delivery:

  • In person: Nanaimo, May 2-3, 2024 (14 hours), $850.

  • Location: Coast Bastion Hotel, Nanaimo

  • Daily schedule: 9am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm

  • Trainers: Amelia Shaw and Tannis Topolnisky

  • Please note: We will be providing all day coffee/tea/water, a mid morning and mid afternoon light snack.  You are on your own for everything else.

Course Objectives: 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify a range of methods that can be used for various engagement purposes and processes, and strategies to select the most appropriate method/s for an engagement project/process

  2. Research, design and test a face to face and/or online method using a range of tools and resources

  3. Apply the four steps of designing a method to incorporate the eight key components of method design

  4. Develop rational and experiential aims

  5. Design an appropriate format

  6. Design questions and process

  7. Develop appropriate communications

  8. Combine methods to achieve engagement goals and objectives and test for appropriate sequencing

  9. Incorporate inclusivity and diversity principles

  10. Identify data management needs, evaluation points and measures

  11. Identify resources required

  12. Explore a variety of both face to face and online methods/techniques that include a nested structure of different methods (e.g. deliberative processes, Appreciative Inquiry, Open Space Technology)

  13. Analyze the specific engagement requirements for online and digital methods, identify and select appropriate platforms and tools to meet needs, and strategies to sequence these methods for delivery

  14. Identify principles for monitoring online activity

  15. Test the design by running elements of the method and submitting for peer review using a checklist

  16. Apply methods to achieve engagement goals and objectives including using effective communication skills, and test for appropriate sequencing

  17. Design key messages and know how to use communication tools that build trust and integrity, and meet the needs of diverse audiences

Target Audience: 

  1. Practitioners with some public participation and engagement practice experience who are looking to cement their knowledge and skills

Either "Fundamentals of Public Participation and Engagement (Level 1 practitioners)" or "IAP2 Way in Challenging Contexts (Level 2 practitioners)" is a prerequisite for this course.

Cancellation, Refund and GST Policies:

  • Cancellations

All cancellations and requests for refunds for In-Person and Virtual Training must be made in writing as indicated below. Requests must be sent to Amelia Shaw Consulting at info@ameliashaw.ca. Telephone requests will not be honored.

In-Person and Virtual courses require a minimum number of participants to proceed so that we can ensure that the best possible learning experience is provided.  Amelia Shaw Consulting  reserves the right to cancel a course if the minimum number of participants isn’t reached 2 weeks prior to the course start date. Registered participants will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer their registration to another course.

To guarantee your spot in a course full payment is required.  If you require an exception please contact us at info@ameliashaw.ca. .

  • Refunds

Requests for refunds require written notice sent to Amelia Shaw Consulting at info@ameliashaw.ca and must be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the course start date for In-Person and two weeks prior for Virtual courses. Participants who cancel within this time period will receive a full refund, minus an administrative fee of $50.00.

  • No Refunds

There will be no refunds for cancellation requests received within the 30 day period prior to the In-Person course start date or two weeks prior to the Virtual course start date.. Transfers to future sessions or courses will also not be permitted within this time period. However, a substitute may be named and that registration will be honoured. Please email your substitution information to info@ameliashaw.ca at least two working days prior to the start date of the course. 

There will be no refunds for missed (full or partial) courses and session recordings are not available.  

Training participants are responsible for ensuring that they have access to Zoom and Google Drive, and are able to access course materials.

Multiple session courses usually build up knowledge from one session to the next. If a participant misses a full session they may not be able to attend subsequent sessions of the course.

  • GST

If your employer is exempt from paying GST/HST, please send an email to info@ameliashaw.ca prior to paying stating your name, organization and GST/HST exemption number, so that GST/HST can be removed. Refunds will not be provided after an invoice has been paid.
