Fundamentals & Designing Public Participation & Engagement (Calgary, April 10-12, 2024)

This in-person training includes two out of the three core courses necessary to obtain the IAP2 Global Certificate in Public Participation.

IAP2 Fundamentals of Public Participation (P2) and Engagement is a Level 1 course that focuses on understanding and applying the practices of meaningful and effective public participation. The training explores principles, concepts and best practices, and how to design and apply this knowledge to your public participation and engagement work.

Designing Public Participation & Engagement introduces practitioners to the design and plan phases of the practice framework, providing them with the opportunity to develop public participation and engagement practice plans. This includes scoping, community mapping, determining purpose and objectives and levels of influence, choosing appropriate methods and managing resources, while considering the needs of diverse audiences. Two-course Delivery:

  • In person: Calgary, April 10-12, 2024 (21 hours), $1275.

  • Location: The training is taking place at the Best Western Plus Village Park Inn. The hotel is located in the University District of NW Calgary. It is located a 5 minute walk from the Banff Trail LRT station.

  • Daily schedule: 9am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm

  • Trainers: Amelia Shaw and Gay Robinson

  • Please note: We will be providing all day coffee/tea/water, a mid morning and mid afternoon light snack.  You are on your own for everything else.

COURSE OBJECTIVES - Fundamentals of Public Participation & Engagement: 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define public participation and engagement and related terms and what makes it unique

  2. Identify what makes public participation and engagement meaningful 

  3. Reflect on the benefits, risks and myths related to public participation and engagement

  4. Identify and discuss IAP2 five core foundations in their application to public participation and engagement work 

  5. Identify the role that values (seven core values) play in public participation and engagement work and the leadership attributes that will serve them as they practice 

  6. Understand the IAP2 Spectrum of public Participation and rationale for the increasing intensity as decision impacts  

  7. Reflect on and apply ethical leadership actions and abilities to public participation and engagement situations 

  8. Apply the Profiles of public participation and engagement model to public participation and engagement and explore organization-led and community-led engagement and how that impacts the engagement process 

  9. Reflect on and apply the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion and explore the role of power and influence and its impacts on the approach to public participation and engagement

  10. Apply the IAP2 spectrum to public participation and engagement situations and practice 

  11. Explore the Practice Framework (design, plan, implement, learn) as a tool for effective planning and process, and assess the quality of the process 

COURSE OBJECTIVES - Designing Public Participation & Engagement:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to design an engagement process and plan for a real-world scenario, including:

  1. Plan a clear scope of the work, problem or opportunity with identified negotiables and non-negotiables

  2. Conduct detailed stakeholder analysis, community mapping and equity analysis

  3. Identify appropriate roles and levels of influence for key players

  4. Establish clear engagement purpose and objectives and success criteria/measures to suit the scenario

  5. Identify relevant profiles of engagement

  6. Conduct a detailed risk/opportunities analysis

  7. Choose and sequence appropriate methods (in-person and digital) and identify communication tactics to suit the scenario

  8. Identify key roles for senior leaders and decision makers

  9. Explore principles and approaches for equity, diversity and inclusion and apply them to stakeholder analysis

  10. Embed digital strategies, platforms, and methods as part of the plan and process

  11. Develop an evaluation framework to suit the scenario

  12. Identify key roles and resources needed to implement the P2/engagement plan

  13. Develop and apply a suitable pitch to senior leaders that will secure commitment and resources for the P2/engagement plan

  14. Identify the many different contexts of engagement including the elements present in more complex engagement scenarios

Practitioners with some public participation and engagement practice experience who are looking to cement their knowledge and skills.

Cancellation, Refund and GST Policies:

  • Cancellations

All cancellations and requests for refunds for In-Person and Virtual Training must be made in writing as indicated below. Requests must be sent to Amelia Shaw Consulting at info@ameliashaw.ca. Telephone requests will not be honored.

In-Person and Virtual courses require a minimum number of participants to proceed so that we can ensure that the best possible learning experience is provided.  Amelia Shaw Consulting  reserves the right to cancel a course if the minimum number of participants isn’t reached 2 weeks prior to the course start date. Registered participants will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer their registration to another course.

To guarantee your spot in a course full payment is required.  If you require an exception please contact us at info@ameliashaw.ca.

  • Refunds

Requests for refunds require written notice sent to Amelia Shaw Consulting at info@ameliashaw.ca and must be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the course start date for In-Person and two weeks prior for Virtual courses. Participants who cancel within this time period will receive a full refund, minus an administrative fee of $50.00.

  • No Refunds

There will be no refunds for cancellation requests received within the 30 day period prior to the In-Person course start date or two weeks prior to the Virtual course start date.. Transfers to future sessions or courses will also not be permitted within this time period. However, a substitute may be named and that registration will be honoured. Please email your substitution information to info@ameliashaw.ca at least two working days prior to the start date of the course. 

There will be no refunds for missed (full or partial) courses and session recordings are not available.  

Training participants are responsible for ensuring that they have access to Zoom and Google Drive, and are able to access course materials.

Multiple session courses usually build up knowledge from one session to the next. If a participant misses a full session they may not be able to attend subsequent sessions of the course.

  • GST

If your employer is exempt from paying GST/HST, please send an email to info@ameliashaw.ca prior to paying stating your name, organization and GST/HST exemption number, so that GST/HST can be removed. Refunds will not be provided after an invoice has been paid.
